Rethinking Success

"Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others." - Jack Welch

I don’t know about all of you, but for me, this was one of the hardest transitions to make when I became a basketball coach. During my whole athletic career, which was not very long, I felt success from my own accomplishments. When you are a coach, teacher, or leader of any kind, this concept gets completely flipped on its head. We no longer can derive that sense of accomplishment from what we do; that sense of accomplishment now comes from how successful our teams are. I’ve noticed that I have a greater sense of pride when an individual on my team or my whole team performs or develops than anything I’ve ever accomplished on my own. Learning to help grow and develop people is one of the greatest parts of being a leader. If you want to feel successful as a leader, do everything in your power to help your team members be successful.
