“Do Unto Others As They Would Like to be Done Unto.” – Platinum Rule
As a leader, this is a very interesting concept. Do unto others as they would like to be done unto; this is known as the Platinum Rule. Most of us have heard of the Golden Rule, Do Unto Others as you would have them Do Unto You. When we are in a leadership role, though, I believe the Platinum Rule fits better; here is why…as a leader, it is up to us to be versatile with our team, not the other way around. As a leader, we need to make sure that we are making our team comfortable based on their communication style. We can’t expect people to be versatile with us; we need to adapt our communication style to that of our team members. Notice, I did not say BECOME a different communication style. If we do that, we will come off as fake, phony, or not genuine because our words, tone, and body language will not be in line. We need to stay true to ourselves while still making the other person feel comfortable. The most successful leaders I have ever come across expect themselves to be versatile with others; they expect themselves to adapt their own communication style to make others feel comfortable and expect themselves to adjust to the needs of their team, not the other way around.
